One Of Us: Kristopher Schau

HOW DID OUR RELATIONSHIP BEGIN?

To inspire ideas for my podcast, I frequently, perhaps ironically, buy random magazines. But when I saw an article about Radium watches in some men’s periodical, the irony disappeared; I instantly fell in love. The Norway-made Radium watch had me smitten - I found the watch so apt, so correct, somehow. I had to own one. And I'm not really a watch guy.

SO WHAT WAS THE PROBLEM?

This was some years ago, and it was impossible to buy Radium Instruments back then, there was only one guy making them and the lists were full. I honestly didn’t know what to do. I even established an automatic online search for Radium Instruments on internet auctions to find one! Not getting any results, I bought a vintage watch on Ebay, not realizing that vintage watches were really small, like children's watches, I never used it (laughs). There was nothing I wanted more. Radium remained the most beautiful watch I have ever seen. 

WHAT WAS THE RESOLUTION?

Well, I mentioned my love of Radium watches on a podcast “Krisemøter” episode. After a couple of years, the guys from Radium reached out. They had sorted production out and invited me to choose a watch! Now I finally own the watch I’ve been wanting for years. It was worth the wait.

 

WHICH WATCH DID YOU GO FOR?

The Original Radium Grønnspett (Green Woodpecker) is the one for me. I wanted the one with “Norway” on it, a green dial that resembles my first watch as a kid, and a watch I’m sure my Grandad would approve of!

In my opinion, Radium is a “memory lane” kind of concept. It’s about all the things, big and small, that have been lost in time, that exist no more (laughs) - I’m getting old and increasingly preoccupied with the past!

THAT’S A GREAT STORY. ANY FAMOUS LAST WORDS?

I want a good instrument on my wrist. With a design that point backwards in time. The opposite way of time itself.
